Curtis Fuller trombone solo on Blue Train – performance and video

I used iRealPro to generate a rhythm section backing track. My library in iRealPro did not actually have a track for Blue Train, so I created a new song in iRealPro. As strange as this might sound – because Blue Train is “just” Eb blues – I wasn’t totally sure what the chords were. I thought I was hearing some C7 and Fm7 and Ao7 in there, so I put in some of that but not all. Some of it might just be subs that Curtis Fuller is using on his playing. Anyway, I listened to the backing track I made in my air pods while playing the solo using Photo Booth on my mac to record the video. I also recorded the backgrounds played by Lee Morgan and John Coltrane during the 5th chorus. I imported a fresh iRealPro backing track from my phone onto my laptop and used that as an audio track for this video. So the backing track I’m hearing while playing the solo is not exactly what’s in the video. I took care to remember that I played the track at 134 bpm (which is actually a little too fast for me currently on the 16th note runs), which results in about 7.2 seconds per four bars. I screenshot the pdf manuscript to get the images for the written solo. I dropped everything into iMovie and lined it up, etc. It’s hard to put something out there that I know is not perfect, both in terms of movie production (which I’ve not done much of) and trombone playing (which is always getting better) but… you gotta get out there, I guess.
